Commentary | Sancho, pointing to don Quixote, introduces him to the Duchess, who rides a white horse and holds a goshawk (accurate to Cervantes' text).
Just one maiden accompanies the Duchess; in other illustrations, her retinue is larger. Since Paris: Surugue, 1723, this gallant scene, with not many changes, is habitual in 18th and 19th centuries editions. Drawing and engraving are acceptable as a whole, but deficient in some details. |
Notes | 1 - Plate XIV.
2 - Surrounded by a strong line enclosing underneath a space for inscription, which however has been left blank. 3 - Copy after Coypel's illustration (Paris: Surugue, 1723). 4 - Probably, the copy has been done after the plate for Paris/La Haye: Chez Bleuet, 1774, which has a similar frame and underneath space but with caption. 5 - The plate is not signed. |
